Paul Petersen Pleads Guilty to Arizona Charges in Adoption Fraud Scheme

Phoenix, Arizona - Attorney General Mark Brnovich announced last week that former Maricopa County Assessor Paul Petersen pleaded guilty in Maricopa County Superior Court to running an adoption fraud scheme that involved bringing pregnant women from the Marshall Islands to the U.S. to give birth, fraudulently paid for by Arizona taxpayers. Today's plea agreements only resolve Petersen’s criminal cases in Arizona.

Beaumont, Texas - A Texas man was charged in an indictment unsealed Tuesday with wire fraud, false statements to a financial institution and money laundering for his alleged participation in a scheme to file fraudulent loan applications seeking more than $3 million in forgivable Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration (SBA) under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
